Immediately upon hearing of Kyabje Mindrolling Trichen's passing into parinirvana, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa expressed his great wish to journey to Mindrolling Monastery. Unfortunately due to circumstances he was not able to come immediately and sent his emissary HE Drubpön Rinpoche to convey his condolences and respects.

However, due to the profound dharma connection shared over many generations between the Karmapas and the Mindrolling Trichens, the tendrel fell into place that on the 23rd of February His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa was able to come to Mindrolling Monastery for ten days. His Holiness arrived accompanied by Drubpön Rinpoche, his sister, and 30 monks and the next day began performing the drubchö of Gyalwa Gyamtsho.
